Basil R. "Bake" Hertel, 91 of Antwerp, passed away Friday, February 4, 2011 at his residence.
Bake was born in Antwerp on August 13, 1919, a son of the late Abbie J. (Carr) and Frederick N. Hertel.
He proudly served in the U.S. Army during WW II. Bake fought in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge and assisted in liberating Nazi concentration camps in Nordhausen, Germany.
He worked at BA Smith Lumber Company. Bake was also a self employed carpenter, whose favorite past-time was being in his woodworking shop & cutting firewood.
Bake was a member of Divine Mercy Catholic Parish; Antwerp VFW Post 5087 & American Legion Post 253.
On October 4, 1952 he married Teresa Arend. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Teresa; daughter, Marilyn (Paul) Arceo of Fort Wayne; son, Raymond (Linda); brother, Frederick "Mike" (Penny) both of Antwerp; 2 step grandchildren & 3 step great grandchildren.
He is also preceded in death by his sister, Caroline Sevey.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, 303 S. Monroe Street, Antwerp on Tuesday February 8, 2011 at 10 am. Military honors will be held at the church.
Viewing is Monday 2 to 6 pm, with a Catholic Vigil Service at 6 pm at Dooley Funeral Home, 202 W. River Street, Antwerp.
He will be laid to rest at Maumee Cemetery.
