Carole S. Dunderman, 68, of Antwerp, died surrounded by her family on Saturday, August 16th at the Defiance Inpatient Hospice Center after an extended illness.
She was born October 28, 1939 near Antwerp, Ohio, the daughter of Wendell R. and Nellie M. (Reed) Savage. She was a 1957 graduate of Antwerp High School. In 1973, Carole graduated with a degree in sociology from Indiana University - Purdue University at Fort Wayne. In 2000, she retired from the Ohio Department of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities after 26 years of service. She was an enthusiastic traveler, and happily welcomed new adventures. As her family included several avid fishermen, many of her trips were to lake cottages and resorts in Michigan, Minnesota, and Canada. Carole enjoyed visiting her children wherever they resided over the years, and even accompanied her grandson, Nathaniel Lucas, to New England and Washington, DC. Her most recent adventures included Alaskan and Caribbean cruises, and a trip to Cancun, Mexico. Perhaps her most memorable sojourns were the two rafting excursions down the Colorado River with her daughters, Rebecca and Vanessa. Though Carole enjoyed reading, movies, theater and music, the greatest love and center of her life was her family. She took pleasure from sharing in many of her family's life events, and was always available when a family member needed encouragement or support. She loved playing cards at family gatherings and relished a good game of Scrabble with her mother, her sister, and her sisters-in-law. Yet it was her children from whom she drew the most joy. She considered it one of her life's greatest accomplishments that all five of her children graduated from college.
She will be sadly missed by daughters Elaine (Phil) Kuhn of Edgewood, KY, Rebecca (Jack) Benna of Glendale, AZ, Vanessa (Paul) Sciortino of Jeffersonville, VT, sons Bradley (Judy) of Clarendon Hills, IL and Douglas (Laura) Cincinnati, OH, sister Barbara (Richard) Brown of Hicksville, brother Lynn (Ruth) Savage of Coral, MI, sister-in-law Peggy Savage of Antwerp, eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Her first great-grandchild, Lincoln Lucas, is expected to be born within the next few weeks.
Preceding her in death were her parents, stepfather Melvin (Dugan) Billman, stepmother Mildred Savage, and brother Rex (Pete) Savage.
A private burial service will be held at Maumee Cemetery, Antwerp. Friends and family are invited to join in celebrating Carole's life on Friday, August 22nd from 4 to 7 p.m. at Grant's Reception Hall, 501 East Canal St. in Antwerp.
Preferred memorials are to the Defiance Inpatient Hospice Center, 06817 SR 66 N, Defiance, Ohio 43512.
