Don Oberlin

June 8, 1947 — January 10, 2024

Antwerp

Donald J. Oberlin passed away on January 10, 2024 after a long battle with cancer.

Don was born on June 8, 1947, in Bryan, Ohio.  Coming from humble beginnings on the family turkey farm he went on to build a life filled with love, laughter, and enduring friendships.

Don's early years were marked by a love for scouting, horseback riding, 4-H, and dreams of being a cowboy. He graduated from Bryan High School and Bowling Green State University, with a BS in education. It is there where he formed lifelong bonds with a group of open-minded friends known as "The Doobies."

His journey continued when he met the love of his life, Marsha Gerencser, at a 4-H event. Their marriage on June 16, 1968, marked the beginning of a beautiful family. Their first home was a trailer so small, they only had enough space to hang half a Christmas tree on a curtain rod!  Eventually he designed and built the ranch home where they raised their three sons.

A dedicated educator, Don taught industrial arts education at Perrysburg and Hicksville High School before venturing into entrepreneurship. He co-founded Black Swamp Builders and later established Tri-State Solarcrete with his brother-in-law, Jim "Hunkey" Gerencser. The "Solarcreteures", became synonymous with hard work, shotcrete mastery, and energy efficiency.

Don was an active member of the Antwerp Rotary Club, he served in various roles, including club president. His was also on the Paulding County Mental Health Board and the Antwerp Community Improvement Corporation.

Don's legacy lives on through his beloved wife, Marsha, sons Gabe (Mary) and Matt, granddaughters Heather and Katie, and his brothers, Deloy, Stan, Ean St. Claire, Neil, Chris, and Scott. He leaves behind a network of nieces and nephews.

May Donald J Oberlin rest in peace, reunited with his parents Charles & Donna Vee Shough, brother Timothy, sister Jane, and beloved son Benjamin.
