Gene R. Hughes, 84, of Antwerp, passed away at Community Health Professionals, Defiance Hospice Center, on July 16, 2012. He was born on July 15, 1928, the son of Paul D. and Bernice (Knupp) Hughes in Ft. Wayne. On May 27, 1950 he married Ola âBuddieâ Horn, who survives. He was co-owner and owner of the Oasis Bar, and also worked at Dana Weatherhead and Pond-A-River Golf Club. Gene enjoyed fishing and watching sports and being with family. He is survived by sons Cork, Gary, Vince and Kent (Beth) Hughes, all of Antwerp, and daughters Louise Goll, Antwerp, Lynn (John) Garlough, Willard, and Cindy (Mike) Kauser, Paulding. He is also survived by his sister, Joan Sidenbender, 14 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his siblings Helen Fillman, Irvin, Neil, and Jack Hughes.
Visitation will be Wednesday, July 18 from 3:00-8:00 p.m. with a scripture service at 7:30 p.m. at Dooley Funeral Home in Antwerp. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 19, at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, Antwerp. Friends may also call at 9:00 a.m. at the funeral home before the service. Burial will be at the Maumee Cemetery. Preferred memorials may be to Community Health Professionals Hospice Center or a Memorial Mass at Divine Mercy.
