Jacob Peter Schaefer, 73 of Dickinson Texas, formerly of Payne died at 7:00 p.m. on July 14, 2009 in a Clear Lake, Texas hospital.
He was born March 23, 1936 in Payne, the son of Anthony J. and Florence M. (Wetli) Schaefer. Jake was a farmer for many years in Antwerp, and had a carpet and decorating business in Antwerp and Paulding for 12 years. Jake attended St. Mary's Catholic Church in Antwerp and Shrine of the True Cross Catholic Church in Dickinson, Texas. He was a devout Catholic. Jake graduated from Payne High School in 1954. He attended college at St. Joe, Rensselaer, IN.
He will be sadly missed by his four children, Steve (Leslie) Schaefer, Houston, Texas; Laura Boldman, Murphy, Texas; Joan Cross, Phoenix, Arizona and Judi (Craig) Cherry, Richardson, Texas; 7 grandchildren, Kendra, Jacob, Alexandria, Jami, Nicholette, Spencer and Dylan; brother, Charles (Christine) Schaefer; sister, Rose Ann Glass, sister-in-law, Lorraine (Schaefer) Pellagini, all of Payne. Preceding him in death were his parents, Anthony J. and Florence M. Schaefer, a brother, Norman Schaefer and a sister, Geraldine Mullen.
Spending time with family and friends remained Jake's favorite pastime his entire life. In his retirement years, he developed a love for cooking, reading, wood-working as well as exploring many diverse subjects on the internet from hydrogen powered cars to a new appetizer recipe. Jake volunteered with Galveston County Hospice for the past five years. He did a wonderful job bringing comfort to terminal patients and their families. He was also an 'inventor', creating and distributing items he designed to make his hospice patients lives more comfortable and productive. Jake had a special gift for helping people, giving back to his community and he truly never knew a stranger.
Visitation is Thursday, July 30, 4 to 8 pm at Dooley Funeral Home, Payne with the Rosary at 8 pm.
You are invited to participate in his Mass of Christian Burial Friday, July 31, at 10:00 am at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, Payne.
Burial in St. John's Cemetery.
