Joan Amaryllis Schmidt, 94, of Payne, passed away March 27, 2025, at Glenn Park of Defiance.
Joan was born on October 26, 1930 in Paulding, a daughter of the late Emma (Zielke) & Roy Ames.
Joan was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who shared 76 wonderful years with her beloved husband, Richard Schmidt, after marrying him on February 26, 1949. She worked as a seamstress for Vera Bradley for many years and was deeply involved in her church, St. John Lutheran Church in Briceton. Joan began playing the organ there as a teenager and continued throughout much of her life, also contributing to the church through her participation in the St. John Women of the ELCA and helping with vacation Bible school. Family was at the heart of Joan's life; she cherished her grandchildren, sewing them dress-up clothes and Halloween costumes, and she and Dick enjoyed spending summers with them at the lake.
She will be sadly missed by her husband, Richard "Dick" Schmidt; children, Jim (Terese) & Jay (Jodie) Schmidt; sister Judy (Bob) White; grandchildren, Kierin (Mike) Beasom, Emma (Eric) Schmidt, Andrew (Augusta) Schmidt, Joe (Virginia) Schmidt, Anna Schmidt, & Sophia Schmidt; & great grandson, Haldon.
Joan was preceded in death by her daughter, Jill Porter; son Stephen Schmidt; & brother, Jerry Ames.
