June Louise Temple

June Temple of Antwerp went home to be with her Lord Jesus on Thursday, May 16, 2019. Born June 15, 1922, the daughter of J, Frank and Fannie (Ruff) Shumaker in Bremen, Ohio. She graduated from Flint High School, Flint, Michigan. She studied nursing at  Lancaster Ohio Hospital where she met her future husband, James S. Temple, who precedes her in death. They were married on December 27, 1940. She was a Navy wife during World War II and Jim’s navy reserve years She is also preceded in death by her step mother, Dorothy Moyer.

As a child she loved to go to her grandma Ruff's farm, where her mother and 10 sisters and brothers were raised. She went to high school at Hughes High School in Cincinnati and went to see President Franklin D. Roosevelt speak at her father's urging, She attended four high schools in four years as her father sold Chevrolets.  June wrote a column TALES AND LEGENDS that Sandra plans to have them published with other memories.  She was a fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes. She ended every column with her belief "Take Care- I care" She told her family when asked how you are say "I'm great, and tomorrow I might be. June believed you should tell the truth for when you tell the truth you are right with God and all things are possible. She was compassionate, brave, strong- willed and positive.

She worked with her husband at The Twin City News, Baltimore, Ohio; and they bought the Antwerp Bee- Argus in 1958 and she set type on the linotype, did book keeping and when her husband died in 1996 she was the publisher and still did proofreading, mailing and bookkeeping. She retired at the age of 92 years young. She had been a Sunday school teacher in Baltimore and a Brownie and Girl Scout leader in Delphos. In Antwerp she was a supporter of the Ehrhart Museum. and Antwerp St, Louis Wabash Depot. She liked the depot so much that she invested in its future and personally helped save the depot by putting on a new metal roof,   June was an arthritis hero. She was a compassionate friend and eager to help others and always happy to greet others and welcome them into her family. She was a member of 1st United Presbyterian, Antwerp, life member of VFW Aux. 5087, American Legion Post 253 Aux and Rotary Ann.

She is survived by 3 children: Marcia  (Rev. Gilmore) Creelman, Jasper, New York, Sandra Temple and Rodger S. Temple, both of Antwerp ; 4 grandchildren Brian (Sheri), Allen (Sheri)  & Sue Creelman & Carol Lapham; 8 great grandchildren, Brian (Leah), Debra, Heather, Holly & Scotty Creelman, Joshua, Kevin & Justin Lapham; 8 great great grandchildren, Ashton Bryant, Konnar, Brayden, Grayson & Jayce Creelman and Lincoln, Emma & Juliana Lapham and loyal 4 legged friend, Suzie-Q Maya Mac.

Funeral service is Wednesday, 10:30 am, First Presbyterian Church of Antwerp, with viewing 9:30 - 10:15 am.

She will be laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery.

Viewing is also Tuesday, 5 - 7 pm with a VFW Aux. service at 7 pm at Dooley Funeral Home, Antwerp.

JUNE'S LIFE STORY

All who knew June Temple would agree that she was truly beautiful on the inside and out. She was a positive thinker who believed in telling the truth as part of an unwavering faith that was a cornerstone in her life. June was a loving and devoted wife and mother, and there was nothing she treasured more than becoming a grandmother, great grand mother and great-great-grandmother. She was very proud to have five generations. Her strength was inspiring, and she was the sort of person who never backed down from a challenge. Life will never be the same without June here, but she leaves behind a timeless legacy that her loved ones will proudly carry on in her footsteps. It was great to be an American during the decade that we fondly recall as the Roaring Twenties. Innovation was leading the way to new technology that brought us things like radios. June recalls the first radio and grandpa Ruff listening to the news on the radio and turning it off to save batteries. Cars were more affordable as they were mass produced on assembly lines. Amelia Earhart and Charles Lindbergh took the world of flight to new heights. Amidst these exciting days was a time of excitement in the lives of Frank and Fannie (Ruff) Shumaker as they announced the birth of the baby girl they named June on June 15, 1922, in Bremen, Ohio. In many ways June was a typical young girl of her generation. It changed when her mother died when she was seven. She loved going to her Grandma Ruff's farm as a young girl, which is where her mother and 10 siblings were raised. To support their family her father sold cars and in 1950 he had owned a Chevrolet dealership and Jim worked for him when he needed help and the family moved to Delphos. She attended local schools, and because her father's work caused them to move frequently she attended four different high schools. One school was Hughes High School in Cincinnati, and she also went to see President Franklin D. Roosevelt speak at her father's urging while in high school. June graduated from Flint High School in Flint, Michigan. After high school, June was eager for all that life had in store. She studied nursing at Lancaster Ohio Hospital, which is where she met the man who would forever hold the key to her heart. His name was James S. Temple, and it didn't take them long to fall in love. With a desire to spend the rest of their lives together June and James were married on December 27, 1940. As a young newlywed, June was a Navy wife while Jim was serving during as an officer and pilot, and served in WWII and also as he was in the Navy Reserves. Together they welcomed three children, Marcia, Sandra, and Rodger into their hearts and home. Jim promised to take her to Paris, and they went to Paris with their daughter, Marcia and her husband 'Gilmore, while he serving in the Air Force in Germany. She was proud of her son Rodger who served on the USS Saratoga during and Viet Nam War in the Navy. Sandra worked side by side by her mother and father as editor of the Antwerp Bee-Argus. Throughout her life June was one to work hard in everything she did with a happy heart and smile. She worked with her husband at The Twin City News, Baltimore, Ohio; and they bought the Antwerp Bee-Argus in 1958. June set type on the linotype and also did the bookkeeping. She believed in telling the truth since doing so makes you right with God, and she also believed that with God, all things are possible. Compassionate and eager to help others, she was gracious, giving, and welcoming to all who were near. Deeply loved, she will be forever missed.
