Penny Snyder

Penelope Ann Snyder lived her life with great enthusiasm. She will be remembered for her vivacious personality, her fun-loving charm, and most of all, her warm affection for others. She was a caring wife, a supportive mother, and a cherished grandmother and friend to so many. We will dearly miss her presence in our lives.

Life was good in 1951. With WWII far off in the past, and by the observations of President Harry S. Truman, the economy was booming and unemployment was extremely low. There were so many people working and commuting that the New Jersey Turnpike was created; however, automobiles still had a ways to go in terms of safety - in fact, turn signals were still considered merely a luxury option forcing drivers to use hand signals to communicate intention. In homes, families gathered around eagerly anticipating the new show, “I Love Lucy” and were marveling at the new direct dial telephone that made operators unnecessary for calling loved ones across the country. This new way of communicating was just in time for Byron & Mildred (Bell) Hayes because they had exciting news to share! Their precious baby daughter was born on August 21, in Van Wert, Ohio. They named her Penelope Ann, and she was the light of their lives.

Penny, as she was affectionately nicknamed, spent her childhood days where she began her life in Van Wert with her brother, Richard. Her father worked diligently to support the family working in a factory. Her mother stayed home to keep the home happy and organized. She also spent time as a hospital volunteer. Her loving parents helped her mature into a young lady while she enjoyed many summer afternoons reading a good book in the shade. Penny loved reading so much that she found a job working at the local library. She attended and ultimately graduated from Van Wert High School.

Love entered her life early on. Not long after high school, she planned her wedding day. She fell in love with Dennis Snyder, and the couple celebrated their wedding on September 21, 1969. They exchanged vows at First Friends Church in Penny's hometown.

The newlyweds settled into their new life together. Penny was a stay at home mother before entering the workforce in 1987 and went to work in the customer service department of Taylor Made Glass in Payne in 2006. Before long, their family grew as they welcomed two children into their lives: Jennifer and Benjamin. The family shared many happy times together.

When Penny found some time to focus on personal joys in life, she could be found working on her hobby of sweep-staking. Antique shopping was also one of her preferred pastimes. When she traveled, she would frequent local wineries, for her palate favored delicious wines. When staying in the comforts of her home sounded more appealing, she looked forward to the relaxation the television brought her. Some of her favorites included HGTV, Food Network (or any cooking show!), and the Travel Channel.

As she watched her children mature into adults and find lives of their own, she looked forward to grandchildren. She also opened her heart to her children's spouses, Jim and Megan; in fact, they considered her the best mother-in-law! In time, she was blessed with the gift of two beautiful grandchildren; Jacob and Julianne brought their grandmother enormous joy.

There were many great times in Penny's life, but she really liked going on vacations. Her best vacation was not long ago when she traveled to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in September of 2017. She took in the beauty of the natural surroundings and felt rejuvenated.

Penny was especially fond of the scripture found in Isaiah: "But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint" (40:31). In her daily love for laughter and constant display of warm smiles, she embodied the scripture's philosophy.

After nearly 50 years together, Penny leaves behind the love of her life. Denny and the rest of her loving family and friends are left with the beautiful memories they share of Penny in this lifetime. She passed away on March 12, 2018, at Van Wert Inpatient Hospice Home. As we hold thoughts of Penny close to our hearts, we will never forget her.

She is survived by her husband, Denny; children Jennifer (Jim)

Hobeck & Benjamin (Megan) of Lima & brother, Richard (Carol) Hayes of Van Wert & grandchildren, Jacob & Julianne.

Service is Thursday, March 15, 2018, 11 am at Dooley Funeral home, 5761 SR 500, Payne with viewing one hour prior.

Viewing is also Wednesday, March 14, 2018, 2-4 & 6-8 pm at Dooley Funeral Home.

She will be laid to rest at Wiltsie Cemetery, Payne.

Penelope Ann Snyder 66 of Payne, passed away March 12, 2018 at Van Wert Inpatient Hospice Home.

Penny was born and raised in Van Wert on Aug. 21, 1951 a daughter of the late Byron & Mildred (Bell) Hayes. 

Penny worked in customer service at Taylor Made Glass, Payne. 

She married Dennis Snyder on Sept. 21, 1969 at First Friends Church, Van Wert. 

She will be sadly missed by her husband, Denny; children, Jennifer (Jim) Hobeck &Benjamin (Megan) of Lima & brother, Richard (Carol) Hayes of Van Wert & grandchildren, Jacob & Julianne.

Service is Thursday, March 15, 2018, 11 am at Dooley Funeral Home, 5761 SR 500, Payne, with viewing one hour prior.
